1. Brigadier General (US Army)

Military · US Army Rank Abbreviations

Lowest general officer rank in the Army, pay grade O-7, marked by one silver star. A BG typically serves as a deputy commanding general of a division, commands a smaller formation, school or installation, or holds a senior Pentagon staff post.

Example: BG Hughes, the deputy commanding general for maneuver, observed the live-fire exercise.

Commonly called a "one-star general." The Air Force and Space Force write Brig Gen and the Marine Corps BGen; AP style uses Brig. Gen. The British Army's equivalent, Brigadier (Brig), is not counted as a general officer. Fewer than one percent of Army officers reach general officer rank.

2. Blood glucose

Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations

General term for the sugar level in blood, used for laboratory results and especially for fingerstick meter or continuous glucose monitor readings. Many adults with diabetes aim for about 80 to 130 mg/dL before meals under American Diabetes Association guidance, with individual targets set by their clinicians.

Example: BG 54 at 0300; 15 g of juice given and recheck in 15 minutes was 102.

Hospitals call bedside tests POC glucose or CBG (capillary blood glucose); patients often say "blood sugar" or BS. Meters are calibrated to report plasma-equivalent values, but readings can differ from a lab result by up to about 15 percent. Low readings below 70 mg/dL count as hypoglycemia and below 54 mg/dL as clinically significant hypoglycemia.

3. Bulgaria

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Bulgaria's code prefixes its VAT numbers and IBANs. Sofia is the capital and BGR the alpha-3 code; Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and the euro area in 2026, and the Cyrillic script took shape in the First Bulgarian Empire.

Example: Bulgarian VAT numbers begin with BG followed by nine or ten digits.

Sports bodies use BUL rather than BGR. In Bulgaria a nod of the head traditionally means no and a shake means yes, a famous source of tourist confusion.

4. Bank guarantee

Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations

Bank's written promise to pay a beneficiary up to a specified amount if its customer fails to fulfill a contractual obligation, used to secure performance, advance payments, tenders and rent. It lets the customer offer security without tying up cash.

Example: The contractor provided a BG for 10 percent of the contract value as a performance guarantee.

Common in Europe, the Middle East, India and Asia; in the US, standby letters of credit fill the same role. Demand guarantees are often issued under the ICC's Uniform Rules for Demand Guarantees (URDG 758). Banks usually require collateral or a credit line before issuing one.
