1SG stands for First Sergeant (US Army), a US Army rank abbreviation.
Army E-8 leadership position held by the senior NCO of a company, battery or troop, shown by a diamond set between the chevrons and three rockers. The 1SG runs daily company operations, discipline, training schedules and soldier welfare alongside the company commander.
Example: Formation is at 0630; the 1SG will take accountability and release the company for PT.
Usage notes
Soldiers traditionally call the first sergeant "Top." Unlike master sergeant, first sergeant is an appointment: a master sergeant selected for the job is laterally appointed and returns to MSG when reassigned to a non-1SG position. The Marine Corps writes 1stSgt, and the Air Force treats first sergeant as a special duty for master sergeants through chiefs.
