1LT stands for First Lieutenant (US Army), a US Army rank abbreviation.
Army officer rank at pay grade O-2, worn as a single silver bar. A 1LT often remains a platoon leader or moves to company executive officer, specialty platoon leader or battalion staff, building experience before promotion to captain.
Example: 1LT Shah, the company XO, will coordinate fuel and ammunition resupply.
Usage notes
Silver outranks gold in US officer insignia: the silver bar of a 1LT is senior to the gold bar of a 2LT, and the silver oak leaf of a lieutenant colonel is senior to a major's gold leaf. The pattern exists because silver insignia for captains, first lieutenants and lieutenant colonels predated the gold insignia added later.
