QHP stands for Qualified health plan, a health insurance abbreviation.
Health plan certified for sale on an ACA marketplace, meeting requirements for essential health benefits, cost-sharing limits, network adequacy and metal tiers. Only QHPs bought through the marketplace qualify for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions.
Example: All QHPs on the exchange cover pre-existing conditions and preventive care.
Usage notes
Insurers apply each year for certification by the federal or a state-based marketplace. QHPs may also be sold off-exchange, but without subsidies. Catastrophic plans are a separate category for people under 30 or with hardship exemptions.
