1. Performance improvement plan
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Formal written plan given to an employee whose performance falls short, listing specific problems, measurable goals, support offered and a deadline, commonly 30, 60 or 90 days. Failure to meet the plan often leads to termination.
Example: My manager put me on a PIP, so I'm updating my resume just in case.
PIPs document that an employee was warned and given a chance to improve, which helps defend later dismissals. Employees widely view them as a precursor to being fired, and "getting PIP'd" is common slang; some companies offer a severance option instead. In auto insurance, PIP means personal injury protection, an unrelated term.
2. Personal injury protection
Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations · also used in medicine and transportation
Auto insurance coverage that pays medical expenses, lost wages and sometimes funeral and household services for the driver and passengers after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. It is mandatory in no-fault states.
Example: My PIP paid the ER bill even though the other driver caused the crash.
Twelve states have no-fault auto systems requiring PIP, including Florida, Michigan, New York and New Jersey, and some others make it optional. Michigan's 2019 reform ended its unique requirement of unlimited lifetime medical benefits, letting drivers choose lower limits. In HR, PIP means a performance improvement plan, an unrelated term.
3. Personal Independence Payment
Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations
UK benefit that helps with the extra costs of a long-term health condition or disability, regardless of income or work status, through a daily living component and a mobility component. Eligibility is assessed with a points-based test.
Example: She was awarded the enhanced rate of PIP for both daily living and mobility.
PIP began replacing Disability Living Allowance for working-age adults in 2013. Assessments are carried out by contractors on behalf of the DWP, and many decisions are overturned on appeal. Planned tightening of eligibility in 2025 was dropped after opposition from government backbenchers.
4. Picture-in-picture (PiP)
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Feature that shows one video in a small window over another video or app, so viewers can keep watching while doing something else. TVs, phones, tablets and web browsers support it.
Example: Swipe home during the video call and it continues in PiP over your other apps.
TVs with two tuners offered picture-in-picture from the 1980s, often to watch a second channel. Apple added PiP for iPad in iOS 9 (2015) and for iPhone in iOS 14 (2020), and Android added it in version 8.0 (2017). Some apps restrict PiP to paid subscriptions. Also written PIP.
5. pip Installs Packages (pip)
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
The standard package installer for Python, which downloads libraries from the Python Package Index and installs them with their dependencies. Projects often list requirements in a requirements.txt file.
Example: Create a virtual environment, then pip install -r requirements.txt.
Introduced in 2008 by Ian Bicking as a replacement for easy_install, and bundled with Python since versions 3.4 and 2.7.9. The name is a recursive acronym, given as "pip installs packages" or "pip installs Python". Newer tools such as uv and Poetry offer faster installs and lock files. Always written lowercase.
6. Peak inspiratory pressure
Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations
Highest pressure reached in the airways during a ventilator breath, reflecting both airway resistance and the stiffness of the lungs and chest wall. A rising PIP triggers high-pressure alarms and prompts a search for the cause.
Example: PIP rose from 28 to 45 with unchanged plateau; suctioned a mucus plug and PIP returned to 30.
Comparing PIP with plateau pressure separates problems: a high PIP with a normal plateau points to airway resistance, such as a kinked tube, secretions or bronchospasm, while both rising together suggests stiff lungs, pneumothorax or abdominal distension. In anatomy PIP means the proximal interphalangeal joint of the finger.
7. Proximal interphalangeal (joint)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Middle joint of each finger, between the proximal and middle phalanges. It is commonly injured in ball sports (the jammed finger) and affected in both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, in which bony swellings at the PIP joint are called Bouchard nodes.
Example: Swollen right ring finger PIP after catching a basketball; X-ray negative, buddy taped.
PIP dislocations and volar plate injuries are frequent in athletes, and the joint stiffens easily, so early motion is encouraged. A boutonniere deformity results from injury to the central slip of the extensor tendon over the PIP joint. In auto insurance PIP means personal injury protection.
