PERC stands for Pulmonary Embolism Rule-out Criteria, an emergency medicine abbreviation.
Eight-item decision rule used in patients with low clinical suspicion of pulmonary embolism. If all criteria are met, further testing such as D-dimer is usually unnecessary.
Example: Low pretest probability, PERC negative: age 34, HR 82, SpO2 99%, no leg swelling.
Usage notes
Criteria include age under 50, heart rate under 100, oxygen saturation of at least 95 percent, no hemoptysis, no estrogen use, no prior clot, no unilateral leg swelling and no recent surgery or trauma. Developed by Jeffrey Kline and colleagues in 2004. It should not be applied to patients with moderate or high suspicion.
