1. Open enrollment period

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations · also used in government

Annual window during which people can enroll in, change or drop health coverage without a qualifying life event, used by ACA marketplaces and employer plans. Marketplace open enrollment has traditionally opened November 1, and employers set their own dates, usually in the fall.

Example: OEP ends soon: pick a plan by the deadline for coverage starting January 1.

Missing open enrollment usually means waiting a year unless a special enrollment event occurs. Some state-run marketplaces extend their deadlines. For Medicare, the fall window is formally the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), while OEP can refer to a separate Medicare Advantage window.

2. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

Medicare window from January 1 through March 31 each year when people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and join a Part D drug plan. It cannot be used to move from Original Medicare into Medicare Advantage.

Example: During the MA OEP she left her Advantage plan and returned to Original Medicare with a Part D plan.

Often written MA OEP to distinguish it from general open enrollment. New Medicare Advantage enrollees have a similar change window in their first three months. Returning to Original Medicare does not guarantee acceptance into a Medigap policy without health questions in most states.
