NPI stands for National Provider Identifier, a health insurance abbreviation.
Unique 10-digit number issued by CMS to US health care providers and organizations and required on standard electronic claims under HIPAA. Individuals receive Type 1 NPIs, while organizations such as hospitals and group practices receive Type 2 NPIs.
Example: Enter the rendering provider's NPI in box 24J of the claim form.
Usage notes
NPIs became mandatory for most providers in May 2007. The number carries no information about specialty or location and stays with a provider for life, even after moves. Anyone can look up an NPI in the public NPPES registry. The final digit is a check digit calculated with the Luhn formula.
