1. Out-of-pocket

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

Health care costs paid by the patient rather than the insurer, such as deductibles, copays and coinsurance, plus services the plan does not cover. Plans cap annual in-network cost sharing at an out-of-pocket maximum, after which the plan pays 100 percent of covered care.

Example: Hit my OOP max in July after the surgery, so everything else is covered this year.

The ACA caps in-network out-of-pocket maximums on most plans and adjusts the cap annually; for 2026 it is US$10,600 for an individual and US$21,200 for a family. Premiums, out-of-network charges and non-covered services do not count toward the maximum. The maximum itself is often written OOPM or MOOP.

2. Object-oriented programming

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A programming paradigm that organizes code into objects combining data (fields) and behavior (methods), usually defined by classes. Its core ideas are encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism, and Java, C#, C++, Python and Ruby all support it.

Example: The course covers OOP in Java: classes, interfaces, inheritance and polymorphism.

Simula 67, developed in Norway by Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard, introduced classes and objects, and Alan Kay coined "object-oriented" for Smalltalk at Xerox PARC in the 1970s. Critics argue that deep inheritance hierarchies make code rigid, leading to the advice "favor composition over inheritance". Usually contrasted with functional and procedural programming.

3. Out of print

Arts & Entertainment · Publishing and Book Abbreviations

Status of a book that the publisher no longer prints or sells new. Authors' contracts often let rights revert to them when a book goes out of print.

Example: The book has been OOP for a decade, so used copies sell for $80.

Print-on-demand and e-books make "out of print" harder to define, so modern contracts set sales thresholds instead. In programming OOP means object-oriented programming.
