NCCI stands for National Correct Coding Initiative, a health insurance abbreviation.
CMS program, begun in 1996, that publishes automated edits to prevent improper payment when codes are billed together incorrectly. Procedure-to-procedure edits flag code pairs that should not be billed together, and medically unlikely edits limit units per patient per day.
Example: NCCI edit bundled the venipuncture into the procedure; modifier 59 doesn't apply here.
Usage notes
Modifiers such as 59 or the X modifiers can bypass some edits when services were truly separate, but misuse draws audits. Medicaid programs must apply NCCI methodologies as well. Edits are updated quarterly.
