MEMC stands for Motion estimation, motion compensation, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
TV processing that analyzes movement between frames and inserts artificially generated in-between frames to make motion look smoother, especially in sports. It creates the "soap opera effect" that many viewers dislike for films.
Example: Turn off MEMC before watching the movie, or it will look like a daytime soap.
Usage notes
Brands give it names such as TruMotion (LG), Auto Motion Plus (Samsung) and Motionflow (Sony). In 2018 Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie posted a video urging viewers to disable motion smoothing. The UHD Alliance's Filmmaker Mode, introduced in 2019, turns off such processing in one step. Interpolation can also add input lag in games.
