ATSC stands for Advanced Television Systems Committee, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Organization and family of digital television standards used for over-the-air broadcasting in the United States, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. ATSC 1.0 replaced analog NTSC, and ATSC 3.0, branded NextGen TV, adds 4K, HDR and internet-style delivery.

Example: The TV's ATSC 3.0 tuner picks up the local station's NextGen TV broadcast in 4K HDR.

Usage notes

The committee was founded in 1982, and its first digital standard, using MPEG-2 video, carried the US transition in 2009. ATSC 3.0 is based on internet protocol and HEVC video and is not backward compatible with older tuners; South Korea launched it in 2017 and US stations began in 2020. Some ATSC 3.0 broadcasts are encrypted, which has drawn criticism.
