ICAO stands for International Civil Aviation Organization, an aviation abbreviation also used in organizations.
United Nations specialized agency, established by the 1944 Chicago Convention and based in Montreal, that sets global standards for air navigation, safety, airports, licensing and accident investigation. Its four-letter airport codes, such as EGLL for London Heathrow, are used in flight plans and air traffic control.
Example: Pilots file flight plans using ICAO codes, so Heathrow appears as EGLL rather than LHR.
Usage notes
Pronounced "eye-KAY-oh." ICAO has 193 member states and began operating formally in 1947. Its standards are published as 19 annexes to the Chicago Convention, such as Annex 13 on accident investigation. ICAO also assigns three-letter airline designators (BAW for British Airways) and aircraft type codes (B738 for the Boeing 737-800).
