MUTCD stands for Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, a driving abbreviation.

Federal Highway Administration standard that defines the design and use of every US traffic sign, signal and pavement marking, from stop signs to lane markings. States must adopt it or an equivalent.

Example: The city can't paint rainbow crosswalks that conflict with the MUTCD without risking federal funding.

Usage notes

The first edition was published in 1935, and the 11th edition appeared in December 2023. It specifies details such as the octagonal red stop sign, yellow diamond warning signs and the Highway Gothic lettering used on most US signs. Canada and other countries have their own manuals.
