1. Mitral valve replacement

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Replacement of the mitral valve with a mechanical or tissue prosthesis when repair is not possible, most often for rheumatic disease, heavily calcified valves or failed earlier repairs. Transcatheter mitral replacement is emerging for patients too high-risk for surgery.

Example: S/p mechanical MVR on warfarin with an INR goal of 3.0; new hemolysis prompts a TEE.

Repair is preferred over replacement for degenerative regurgitation because it preserves ventricular function and avoids prosthesis problems. Mechanical mitral valves carry a higher clot risk than aortic ones, so the usual INR target is 2.5 to 3.5. "MVr" with a lowercase r is sometimes used for mitral valve repair, a recurring source of confusion.

2. Motor vehicle record

Official driving history kept by a state, listing license status, violations, accidents, suspensions and DUI convictions. Insurers, employers and rental companies check MVRs to assess drivers.

Example: The trucking company pulled my MVR and saw the speeding ticket from three years ago.

Most violations stay on an MVR for three to seven years, though serious offenses may remain longer. Drivers can request their own MVR from their state agency. Commercial drivers' employers must review their MVRs at least annually under federal rules.
