1. Multimedia Messaging Service

Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations

Extension of SMS that sends photos, short videos, audio clips, longer text and group messages over the cellular network. Phones fall back to MMS for group chats and media when richer messaging is unavailable.

Example: The video came through as a blurry MMS because carriers compress attachments.

Commercial MMS services launched around 2002. Carriers typically cap MMS size at roughly 300 KB to a few megabytes, so images and videos are heavily compressed. MMS requires mobile data to be enabled and correct APN settings, a common cause of failures on MVNO plans. RCS and internet messaging apps have largely replaced it for media sharing.

2. Mohs micrographic surgery

Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations

Skin cancer surgery in which the tumor is removed layer by layer and each layer's entire margin is examined under the microscope while the patient waits, until no cancer remains. It spares healthy tissue and has the highest cure rates for BCC and SCC in high-risk locations.

Example: MMS left nasal tip, cleared in 2 stages; defect repaired with bilobed flap.

Developed by Frederic Mohs at the University of Wisconsin in the 1930s, originally using a chemical paste. Cure rates for primary BCC reach about 99 percent. Appropriate use criteria published in 2012 guide which tumors qualify. Usually done under local anesthesia in an outpatient office.
