1. Basal cell carcinoma

Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations

The most common cancer in people with fair skin, arising from basal cells of the epidermis, usually on sun-exposed areas such as the face. It typically appears as a pearly, translucent papule with rolled edges and fine blood vessels, grows slowly and almost never spreads, but can destroy local tissue if neglected.

Example: Shave biopsy left nasal ala: nodular BCC; referred for Mohs surgery.

Ultraviolet exposure, fair skin and older age are the main risk factors. Subtypes include nodular, superficial, morpheaform and infiltrative, which differ in recurrence risk. Mohs surgery is preferred for high-risk sites such as the central face. Advanced or metastatic cases can be treated with hedgehog pathway inhibitors such as vismodegib. Gorlin syndrome causes numerous BCCs from a young age.

2. Blind carbon copy

Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations

Sends a copy of an email to recipients whose addresses are hidden from everyone else on the message. It protects privacy when emailing large groups and lets a sender quietly include someone.

Example: Please BCC the whole parent list when you send the newsletter so addresses stay private.

Recipients in the To and CC fields cannot see who was BCC'd, but a BCC recipient who clicks "Reply All" may reveal that they received it. Data-protection regulators, including the UK Information Commissioner's Office, have fined organizations for exposing personal addresses by putting mass mailing lists in CC instead of BCC. In typed letters, "bcc:" appeared only on file copies.
