LTE-M stands for LTE for machines (LTE Cat-M1), a telecom abbreviation.
Low-power cellular technology for Internet of Things devices that need moderate data rates, mobility and even voice, such as asset trackers, wearables, alarm panels and rental scooters. It runs on existing 4G networks with software upgrades.
Example: The pet tracker uses LTE-M, so it keeps reporting location while the dog runs across town.
Usage notes
LTE-M was standardized in 3GPP Release 13 in 2016 alongside NB-IoT. It offers speeds around 1 Mbit/s, power-saving modes that stretch battery life to years and handover between cells, which NB-IoT handles poorly. Both technologies continue under 5G as part of massive machine-type communications.
