1. Melanoma in situ
Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations
Melanoma confined to the epidermis that has not invaded the deeper dermis, so it cannot spread and is cured by complete excision with about 0.5–1 cm margins. Lentigo maligna is a slow-growing subtype on chronically sun-damaged skin of older adults.
Example: Pathology: MIS, lentigo maligna type, margins involved; re-excision with 1 cm margins.
Diagnosis of MIS has risen sharply in recent decades, partly from increased screening. People with MIS have a higher risk of later invasive melanoma and need regular skin checks. In surgery MIS means minimally invasive surgery, an unrelated meaning.
2. Minimally invasive surgery
Medical · Surgical Abbreviations
Umbrella term for operations performed through small incisions or natural openings using cameras and specialized instruments, including laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy, endoscopic surgery and robotic-assisted surgery. Goals are less pain, fewer wound complications and faster return to activity.
Example: MIS hernia repair offered; expected return to desk work in one week.
Robotic platforms, led by the da Vinci system cleared by the FDA in 2000, are a growing share of MIS. In spine surgery, MIS techniques use tubular retractors to limit muscle damage. In pediatrics MIS-C means multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, an unrelated condition.
3. Management information system
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Computer-based system that collects operational data and turns it into regular reports, such as sales summaries, inventory status and budget variances, for managers at different levels. MIS is also the name of an academic field and of the corporate department responsible for these systems.
Example: The monthly MIS pack goes to the executive team on the fifth working day after month-end.
In South Asia and the UK, "MIS report" or "MIS pack" commonly refers to the set of internal management reports itself. Many universities offer MIS degrees combining business and information technology. MIS differs from ERP in focusing on reporting rather than on processing day-to-day transactions.
