LTE-A stands for LTE-Advanced, a telecom abbreviation.
Upgrade of LTE, standardized in 3GPP Release 10, that combines multiple frequency bands through carrier aggregation and uses more antennas to raise speeds. Phones often display it as "4G+" or "LTE+".
Example: The phone shows 4G+, meaning LTE-A is combining three bands for faster downloads.
Usage notes
LTE-Advanced met the ITU's original 4G performance targets. Its later evolution, LTE-Advanced Pro (Release 13), was sometimes marketed as 4.5G. In 2019 AT&T labeled LTE-Advanced service "5G E", prompting criticism and a lawsuit from Sprint that was settled in 2020. Most 4G networks today use LTE-A features.
