1. Lumen

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

The SI unit of luminous flux, the total visible light a source emits as perceived by the human eye. Bulbs are sold by lumens: about 800 lm replaces a 60 W incandescent and 1,600 lm a 100 W bulb.

Example: Each LED bulb produces 800 lm while drawing only 9 W.

Since 2011 the FTC has required US bulb packages to show lumens prominently, to shift shoppers from watts to light output. Efficacy in lumens per watt (lm/W) measures efficiency: incandescents give about 15 lm/W and LEDs 80 to over 150 lm/W. Projector brightness is quoted in ANSI lumens.

2. Left main coronary artery (LM)

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Short trunk arising from the left side of the aorta that divides into the left anterior descending and circumflex arteries, supplying most of the left ventricle. Narrowing of 50 percent or more places a large territory at risk.

Example: Distal LM 60% stenosis with three-vessel disease; heart team favors CABG.

Also written LMCA. Left main disease was historically a firm indication for bypass surgery; the EXCEL and NOBLE trials (2016) compared stenting with CABG in selected patients, and their long-term results remain debated. Acute left main occlusion is often fatal before hospital arrival. ST elevation in aVR with widespread ST depression can signal left main or multivessel ischemia.

3. Left midfielder (LM)

Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations

Wide midfielder on the left in a flat four-man midfield, as in a 4-4-2, who both attacks down the flank and tracks back to help the left back. Less advanced than a left winger.

Example: In the 4-4-2 he plays LM, tucking in when the team loses possession.

Wide midfielders are expected to defend more than wingers. Ryan Giggs played the role for Manchester United for much of his career. The right-sided equivalent is RM.
