1. Least Concern
Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations
IUCN Red List category for species evaluated and found not to qualify as threatened or Near Threatened, usually because they are widespread and abundant. Common animals such as the house sparrow, the red fox and humans themselves are listed as LC.
Example: The bird is listed as LC globally, although local populations have declined sharply.
Least Concern does not mean a species is secure everywhere; national red lists may rate it as threatened locally. The category just above it, Near Threatened (NT), flags species close to qualifying as threatened. The IUCN Red List has assessed more than 160,000 species.
2. Lowercase (lc)
Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations
Proofreading and copyediting mark instructing that a capital letter be changed to lowercase. The editor strikes through the capital with a slash in the text and writes lc in the margin.
Example: The editor slashed the capital in "Federal Government" and wrote lc in the margin beside it.
The term comes from letterpress printing, where compositors kept capital letters in the upper case and small letters in the lower case of their type cases, giving us "uppercase" and "lowercase." In digital editing the same instruction appears as a tracked change or a comment. Chicago and the British Standards Institution publish charts of these marks.
3. Saint Lucia
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Caribbean island nation with Castries as its capital, known for the twin volcanic peaks of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has produced two Nobel laureates, economist Arthur Lewis and poet Derek Walcott.
Example: Resort bookings near Soufrière in LC fill up for the jazz festival.
The alpha-3 code is LCA. Saint Lucia changed hands between Britain and France 14 times.
4. Legionaries of Christ
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
Congregation of Catholic priests founded in Mexico in 1941 that runs schools, universities and the lay movement Regnum Christi. The Vatican intervened in 2010 after revelations that its founder, Marcial Maciel, had committed grave abuses.
Example: Fr. Juan Martínez, LC, directs the Regnum Christi youth program.
After the Vatican-ordered reform, the congregation adopted new constitutions in 2014 and publicly acknowledged the founder's crimes. It runs the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. LC also abbreviates the Library of Congress.
