LULUCF stands for Land use, land-use change and forestry, an environmental abbreviation.
Greenhouse gas inventory sector covering emissions and removals from forests, croplands, grasslands, wetlands and settlements, including deforestation, afforestation and changes in soil carbon. In many developed countries LULUCF is a net carbon sink.
Example: The country's net emissions fall by 15% once the LULUCF sink is counted.
Usage notes
How LULUCF is counted can shift national totals dramatically, so climate targets often specify whether they include it. Natural disturbances such as wildfires and pest outbreaks can turn forests from sinks into sources, as happened in Canada's managed forests in some recent years.
