Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations
Everyday trash and recycling from households, businesses, schools and institutions, including packaging, food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, plastics and furniture, but not industrial or construction waste. Cities manage MSW by landfilling, recycling, composting and incineration.
Example: Food waste makes up about a quarter of the MSW sent to landfill in the county.
The US EPA estimated that Americans generated about 292 million tons of MSW in 2018, roughly 4.9 pounds per person per day, of which about a third was recycled or composted. Landfilled organic waste produces methane, making landfills a significant emissions source.
