1. Magnetic resonance venography

Medical · Medical Imaging Abbreviations

MRI study focused on veins, most often the dural venous sinuses of the brain, to diagnose cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in patients with headache, papilledema or seizures. It is also used to assess pelvic and central chest veins.

Example: MRV shows nonfilling of the superior sagittal sinus; anticoagulation started.

Like MRA, it can rely on blood flow or on gadolinium. Normal anatomic variants, such as an underdeveloped transverse sinus, can mimic a clot, so radiologists cross-check other sequences. CT venography (CTV) is a faster alternative in the emergency department.

2. Measurement, reporting and verification

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Process for quantifying emissions or emission reductions, documenting them transparently and having them checked by an independent party. Robust MRV underpins carbon markets, climate finance and national reporting under the Paris Agreement.

Example: The carbon credits will be issued only after third-party MRV of the methane captured at the landfill.

Under the Paris Agreement's Enhanced Transparency Framework, countries began filing Biennial Transparency Reports in 2024. Satellite monitoring of methane plumes and forest cover is increasingly used to cross-check reported data. Weak MRV is a common criticism of voluntary carbon offsets.
