Small heart rhythm monitor inserted under the skin of the chest through a tiny incision, recording continuously for up to about three years. It is used to find the cause of unexplained fainting or palpitations and to detect hidden atrial fibrillation after cryptogenic stroke.
Example: ILR placed for recurrent unexplained syncope; remote monitoring captured a 7-second pause two months later.
Also called an insertable cardiac monitor, with brand names such as Reveal LINQ. Devices store events automatically or when the patient presses an activator, and transmit data remotely. The CRYSTAL AF trial (2014) showed that loop recorders found atrial fibrillation far more often than standard follow-up after cryptogenic stroke.
