IVUS stands for Intravascular ultrasound, a cardiology abbreviation.
Imaging catheter with a miniature ultrasound probe advanced into a coronary artery to show the vessel wall, plaque, lumen size and stent expansion from the inside. It guides stent sizing and optimization, especially in left main and complex lesions.
Example: IVUS showed stent underexpansion; post-dilated with a 4.0 noncompliant balloon.
Usage notes
Pronounced "EYE-vus." Trials such as ULTIMATE (2018) and RENOVATE-COMPLEX-PCI (2023) linked intravascular imaging guidance to fewer adverse events than angiography alone. Optical coherence tomography is a light-based alternative with higher resolution but shallower penetration. IVUS is also used in peripheral and venous interventions.
