National regulator for workplace health and safety in Great Britain, which enforces health and safety law, investigates serious accidents and prosecutes employers. It also acts as the Building Safety Regulator for high-rise residential buildings in England.
Example: HSE inspectors are investigating the scaffolding collapse on the building site.
It was set up under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the framework law for British workplace safety, and is based in Bootle, Merseyside. Local councils enforce health and safety in offices, shops and restaurants. In Ireland, HSE means the Health Service Executive.
