HoL stands for House of Lords, a UK government abbreviation.

Unelected upper chamber of the UK Parliament that scrutinizes and revises legislation passed by the House of Commons. Most members are life peers appointed for their expertise or political service, alongside a number of hereditary peers and 26 Church of England bishops.

Example: The HoL voted to send the bill back to the Commons with three amendments.

Usage notes

Under the Parliament Acts of 1911 and 1949, the Lords can delay most bills for about a year but cannot block them, and by convention it does not oppose manifesto commitments. The House of Lords Act 1999 removed most hereditary peers. Its chamber is decorated in red, in contrast to the Commons' green.
