Weakened, often enlarged left ventricle caused by coronary artery disease, typically after one or more heart attacks or long-standing ischemia. It is the most common cause of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction in high-income countries.
Example: ICM with EF 30% after anterior MI; viability study to decide on revascularization.
The STICH trial and its long-term extension (STICHES, 2016) showed that bypass surgery plus medical therapy reduced death over ten years compared with medicines alone in ischemic cardiomyopathy. "Hibernating myocardium" refers to living but underperfused muscle that may recover after revascularization. Contrast with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM).
2. Iraq Campaign Medal
