HCFC stands for Hydrochlorofluorocarbon, a chemistry abbreviation.
Transitional replacement for CFCs in which some halogen atoms are swapped for hydrogen, so the molecule breaks down partly in the lower atmosphere and does less damage to ozone. HCFC-22, known as R-22, was the standard refrigerant in home air conditioners for decades.
Example: Since 2020, R-22 for servicing older systems must come from recycled or stockpiled HCFC supplies.
Usage notes
HCFCs still deplete some ozone and are strong greenhouse gases, so the Montreal Protocol schedules their phase-out; US production and import of HCFC-22 ended on January 1, 2020, with developing countries following later. Refrigerant numbers such as 22 or 141b follow a standard ASHRAE naming code.
