GenAI stands for Generative artificial intelligence, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
AI systems that create new content, such as text, images, audio, video and code, in response to prompts, rather than only classifying or predicting. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are generative AI tools.
Example: Legal reviewed our GenAI policy: staff may draft emails with it but must never paste client data.
Usage notes
The term spread widely after the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022 and of image generators such as DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion earlier that year. Underlying techniques include transformers, diffusion models and, earlier, GANs. Concerns include copyright, misinformation, deepfakes and confident errors known as hallucinations. Also written "gen AI".
