1. Georgia

Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations

Southeastern state named after King George II, which ratified the Constitution on January 2, 1788, as the fourth state. Atlanta is both capital and largest city, and the Peach State is a leading producer of peanuts, pecans and broiler chickens as well as peaches.

Example: The Peach Bowl tickets were mailed to her apartment in Savannah, GA last week.

Ga., the traditional and AP form, uses the same letters as the postal code set in 1963. The country of Georgia in the Caucasus has the ISO code GE, while GA is the ISO code for Gabon, so international forms never use GA for either Georgia. GA also means general admission on tickets and general availability in software releases.

2. General anesthesia

Medical · Anesthesia Abbreviations

Drug-induced, reversible state of unconsciousness in which patients do not respond to pain and usually need help keeping the airway open and breathing. It is typically induced with intravenous drugs such as propofol and maintained with inhaled agents (sevoflurane, desflurane) or continuous IV infusions, together with opioids and often muscle relaxants.

Example: Plan: GA with ETT, arterial line and possible post-op ICU admission.

The first public demonstration of ether anesthesia took place at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846, now celebrated as Ether Day. The American Society of Anesthesiologists places GA at the deep end of a continuum that runs from minimal sedation through moderate and deep sedation. Airway devices range from endotracheal tubes to supraglottic airways. In obstetrics GA means gestational age.

3. Gestational age

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Age of a pregnancy measured in completed weeks and days from the first day of the last menstrual period, written for example as 32w4d or 32 4/7 weeks. It determines screening schedules, interpretation of fetal growth and the classification of births as preterm, term or postterm.

Example: GA 36w2d by early ultrasound; GBS swab collected today.

Because it is counted from the LMP, gestational age is about two weeks longer than the time since conception. ACOG defines early term as 37 0/7 to 38 6/7 weeks, full term as 39 0/7 to 40 6/7, late term as 41 weeks and postterm as 42 weeks or more. In anesthesia GA means general anesthesia.

4. General availability

Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations

Release stage at which software is finished, supported and offered to all customers, after alpha, beta and release-candidate phases. Cloud providers mark a feature GA once it is covered by their service-level agreements.

Example: The feature is in public preview now and should reach GA next quarter.

A typical sequence runs alpha (internal testing), beta (wider testing), RC (release candidate), RTM or GM (final build) and then GA. Preview features usually lack production support and may change without notice. GA does not mean bug-free, and many teams wait for the first patch release before upgrading critical systems. Outside software, GA is the postal code for Georgia.

5. Garuda Indonesia

Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations

Indonesia's national airline, based at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and a member of SkyTeam. It is named after the Garuda, a mythical bird in Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Example: GA 404 from Jakarta to Bali is a 90-minute hop.

ICAO code GIA; callsign "Indonesia." Its history dates to 1949. Garuda restructured its debts in 2022. In aviation generally, GA also means general aviation, an unrelated meaning.

6. General aviation

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

All civil flying other than scheduled airline and military operations, including private planes, flight training, business jets, air ambulances, crop dusters and helicopters. The US has the world's largest GA fleet, roughly 200,000 aircraft.

Example: The airport handles mostly GA traffic: a flight school, a skydiving operation and a few corporate jets.

Definitions vary: ICAO defines general aviation as civil flying other than commercial air transport or aerial work, while US statistics sometimes include on-demand charter. Public-use GA airports outnumber airports with airline service in the US by roughly ten to one. Pilots also use GA as shorthand for go-around.

7. Granuloma annulare

Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations

Benign skin condition producing rings of small, smooth, skin-colored or reddish bumps, typically on the backs of the hands and feet of children and young adults. It is not contagious and often resolves on its own within about two years.

Example: Annular plaque on dorsal hand, no scale: localized GA, reassurance and optional steroid injection.

The lack of scale distinguishes it from ringworm, which it is often mistaken for. Widespread (generalized) forms affect older adults and may need phototherapy or other treatment. In other medical contexts GA means gestational age or general anesthesia.

8. Gabon

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Gabon, an oil-producing Central African country on the equator with Libreville as its capital, has rainforest over about 88 percent of its territory. GAB is the alpha-3 code.

Example: Timber exports from GA must now be processed locally before shipment.

In US addresses GA means Georgia, the state; the country of Georgia is GE. The .ga domain was once given away free by Freenom. The language code ga is Irish.

9. Gauge (ga)

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

A sizing number for sheet metal, wire, needles and shotguns whose meaning depends on the system: for sheet steel and wire a higher gauge is thinner, while shotgun gauge counts how many lead balls of the bore's diameter make a pound.

Example: The cabinet is built from 16 ga cold-rolled steel.

A 12 ga shotgun bore fits a lead ball weighing 1/12 pound, so a 20 ga gun is narrower. Sheet gauges differ by material: 16 ga steel is about 1.5 mm thick, while 16 ga aluminum is about 1.3 mm. Medical needles use gauge too, so an 18 ga IV catheter is larger than a 22 ga.

10. Gallium (Ga)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Gallium (atomic number 31) melts at about 29.8 °C, so a piece will turn liquid in a person's hand. Its main uses are in semiconductors: gallium arsenide for high-frequency and solar-cell devices, and gallium nitride for blue and white LEDs and compact fast chargers.

Example: Classroom demo: a spoon cast from Ga melts when stirred in a cup of hot tea.

Mendeleev predicted eka-aluminum in 1871, and Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran found it spectroscopically in 1875, naming it after Gallia, Latin for France. Because gallus is also Latin for rooster (le coq in French), some suspected a pun on his own name, which he denied. Gallium wets glass and attacks aluminum, so it is shipped in plastic containers.

11. Graduate assistant

Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations

Umbrella title for graduate students employed by a university in teaching, research or administrative roles, typically 10 to 20 hours a week. The position usually includes a stipend and partial or full tuition remission.

Example: She works as a GA in the career center while finishing her master's in higher education.

Universities subdivide the role as GTA (teaching), GRA (research) or administrative GA. Assistantships in student affairs offices are especially common for master's students in higher education administration. In US college athletics, a GA is a graduate assistant coach.

12. General of the Army

Military · US Army Rank Abbreviations

Five-star Army rank created by Congress in December 1944 so senior US commanders would not be outranked by British field marshals. Only five officers held it: George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry H. "Hap" Arnold and Omar N. Bradley.

Example: Eisenhower, promoted to GA in December 1944, later became the 34th president.

Bradley, promoted in 1950, was the last surviving five-star officer and died in 1981; nobody has held the rank since. Arnold was later redesignated General of the Air Force. It is distinct from "General of the Armies," held by John J. Pershing and, posthumously from 1976, George Washington. In postal use GA is the abbreviation for Georgia.

13. Go-around

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Abandoned landing in which the pilot applies power, climbs away and either rejoins the traffic pattern or flies the missed approach, used when an approach is unstable, the runway is occupied or the runway cannot be seen. A go-around is a normal safety maneuver, not an emergency.

Example: Tower called the GA because a vehicle was on the runway, so we climbed back to 2,000 feet.

Airliners have TO/GA (takeoff/go-around) switches on the thrust levers that command climb thrust and flight director pitch guidance. A Flight Safety Foundation study found that only about 3 percent of unstable approaches end in a go-around, and airlines now actively encourage crews to go around when in doubt.

14. Goals against

Sports · Soccer (Association Football) Abbreviations

Total goals a team has conceded, shown in league tables after goals for. A low GA reflects a strong defense and goalkeeper.

Example: Their GA of 26 was the lowest in the league.

Also written "goals conceded". Goalkeepers in North American leagues are rated by goals against average. In US geography GA is the postal code for Georgia.

15. Genetic algorithm

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

An optimization method inspired by natural selection that evolves a population of candidate solutions through selection, crossover and mutation, keeping the fittest over many generations. It suits scheduling, design and routing problems with huge search spaces.

Example: The GA evolved an antenna shape that beat the engineers' hand-designed version.

Popularized by John Holland at the University of Michigan in the 1970s. NASA used evolutionary algorithms to design an antenna for its Space Technology 5 mission, launched in 2006. In software releases GA means general availability, and in US addresses Georgia.

16. General American

Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations

Names the range of American English accents without strong regional features, often heard in national broadcasting and used as the reference accent in American dictionaries and language teaching.

Example: In GA, the "r" in "car" is pronounced, while in RP it is silent unless a vowel follows.

The term was popularized by the scholar George Philip Krapp in the 1920s and was long linked to Midwestern speech. Linguists treat it as an abstraction rather than a single accent. It is rhotic, pronouncing r after vowels. Outside linguistics, GA is the postal abbreviation for Georgia and the shorthand for general admission.
