HITL stands for Human in the loop, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A design in which people review, correct or approve an AI system's outputs or training data rather than letting it act fully autonomously. It is used for content moderation, medical AI, data labeling and other high-stakes decisions.
Example: Loan denials stay HITL: the model recommends, and an underwriter makes the final call.
Usage notes
Human feedback is also central to training methods such as reinforcement learning from human feedback. The EU AI Act requires human oversight for high-risk AI systems. Related terms include "human on the loop", where people monitor and can intervene, and "human out of the loop".
