HMM stands for Hidden Markov model, an artificial intelligence abbreviation.
A statistical model of a system that moves between hidden states, each producing observable outputs with certain probabilities. HMMs were the backbone of speech recognition and are used in bioinformatics, gesture recognition and part-of-speech tagging.
Example: The HMM infers whether each DNA region is coding or non-coding from the sequence.
Usage notes
Developed by Leonard Baum and colleagues in the late 1960s. The Viterbi algorithm finds the most likely sequence of hidden states, and the Baum-Welch algorithm learns the parameters. Neural networks displaced HMMs in speech recognition during the 2010s.
