1. Society of Jesus

Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations

Initials written after the names of Jesuits, members of the Catholic order of priests and brothers founded by Ignatius of Loyola and approved by Pope Paul III in 1540, known for education, missionary work and scholarship. Jesuits run many universities, including Georgetown, Boston College and Fordham.

Example: The panel included Fr. James Martin, SJ, editor at large of America magazine.

Pope Francis, elected in 2013, was the first Jesuit pope. The order's motto, Ad maiorem Dei gloriam ("for the greater glory of God"), is abbreviated AMDG. The letters come from the Latin Societas Iesu and are written after the name with a comma, sometimes as S.J.

2. Summary judgment

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Judgment entered without a trial when the court finds no genuine dispute of material fact on a claim or defense. The abbreviation appears in notes, docket entries and practitioner shorthand such as "SJ briefing" and "surviving SJ".

Example: If the case survives SJ, the defendant will face real pressure to settle before trial.

Summary judgment is decided on the written record, including depositions, documents and declarations, without live testimony. Courts may grant it in part, narrowing the issues left for trial. Deadlines for SJ motions are usually set in the scheduling order. The motion itself is abbreviated MSJ.

3. Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Norwegian Arctic territories, combined in one ISO entry; Svalbard's main town, Longyearbyen, is home to the Global Seed Vault. Under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty, citizens of signatory countries may live and work there without a visa.

Example: Research cargo for Longyearbyen is labeled SJ rather than NO in some systems.

Svalbard has more polar bears than people by some estimates. Jan Mayen is a volcanic island with only a small Norwegian staff. The alpha-3 code is SJM.
