1. Debt-to-income ratio

Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations

Percentage of gross monthly income that goes toward required debt payments, used by lenders to judge whether a borrower can afford a new loan. Front-end DTI counts only housing costs, while back-end DTI adds car loans, student loans, card minimums and other recurring debts.

Example: With $2,400 in monthly debts on $8,000 of gross income, your DTI is 30%.

Mortgage lenders often prefer a back-end DTI of 36% or less, although automated underwriting can approve conventional loans up to about 50% and government-backed loans sometimes higher with compensating factors. The former 43% cap for qualified mortgages was replaced by a pricing-based test in 2021. DTI uses gross rather than take-home pay and ignores living costs such as groceries and utilities.

2. Deep tissue injury

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Pressure injury category describing intact or broken skin with a persistent deep red, maroon or purple discoloration, or a blood-filled blister, caused by pressure and shear damaging the tissue over bone. It may evolve rapidly into a deep open wound.

Example: Purple 3 x 4 cm DTI to left heel, boggy, heel offloading boot applied.

Formally called deep tissue pressure injury (DTPI) in the 2016 National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel staging system. Darker skin tones make the color change harder to see, so nurses also feel for warmth, firmness or boggy tissue. Heels and sacrum are the most common sites.

3. Dress to Impress

Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations

Roblox fashion game in which players style an avatar to match a theme and are scored by other players, and by extension a theme or challenge inspired by it. Popular with Gen Alpha and young Gen Z.

Example: What's the DTI theme today? I need a good outfit for "Y2K."

Dress to Impress launched on Roblox in late 2023 and became one of the platform's most popular games in 2024, spawning TikTok trends where people recreate DTI looks in real life. Outside the game, DTI may be a generic shorthand for "dress to impress."

4. Direct thrombin inhibitor

Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations

Anticoagulants that bind thrombin directly, including IV argatroban and bivalirudin and oral dabigatran. Argatroban and bivalirudin are the usual alternatives to heparin in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

Example: HIT confirmed: stop all heparin, start DTI argatroban 1 mcg/kg/min, titrate to aPTT.

Argatroban is cleared by the liver and bivalirudin mainly by the kidneys, which guides choice in organ failure. Argatroban falsely raises the INR, which complicates the transition to warfarin. Bivalirudin is commonly used during percutaneous coronary intervention. In nursing DTI means deep tissue injury, a pressure injury stage.
