FMT stands for Fecal microbiota transplantation, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Transfer of screened stool from a healthy donor into a patient's gut to restore normal bacteria, given by colonoscopy, enema or capsules. It is highly effective for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, curing most patients who have failed antibiotics.
Example: Third recurrence of C. difficile; FMT by colonoscopy arranged with stool bank product.
Usage notes
Two standardized microbiome products were approved by the FDA in 2022 and 2023 for preventing recurrent C. difficile infection. Donor screening for infections, including drug-resistant organisms, is essential after transmission events. Research in IBD, IBS and metabolic disease has produced mixed results so far.
