1. Electrostatic discharge

Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations · also used in technology

Sudden flow of static electricity between two objects at different voltages, such as the spark from a finger after walking across carpet. A person can carry thousands of volts without noticing, and discharges far below the level people can feel can destroy or weaken sensitive chips.

Example: Wear an ESD wrist strap clipped to the case before handling the memory modules.

People typically feel a static shock only above about 3,000 volts, while some components can be damaged by less than 100 volts. Electronics are shipped in antistatic bags and assembled on grounded mats, and standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 test product immunity. Static sparks can also ignite flammable vapors, a hazard at fuel pumps.

2. Endoscopic submucosal dissection

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Advanced endoscopic technique that removes a lesion in one piece by dissecting through the submucosal layer beneath it with an electrosurgical knife. It allows accurate pathology staging of early cancers in the esophagus, stomach and colon, sparing many patients from surgery.

Example: Early gastric cancer, 25 mm, no ulceration; en bloc ESD with curative resection.

ESD was developed in Japan in the late 1990s, where early gastric cancer is common. It takes longer and has higher perforation risk than EMR but gives higher rates of en bloc resection. Training in Western countries has expanded rapidly since the 2010s.
