FAP stands for Familial adenomatous polyposis, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Autosomal dominant syndrome caused by APC gene mutations in which hundreds to thousands of colorectal adenomas develop from adolescence, giving a near 100 percent lifetime risk of colorectal cancer without colectomy. Duodenal adenomas, desmoid tumors and congenital retinal pigment changes are associated features.
Example: APC mutation carrier with FAP, age 14; annual colonoscopy started and prophylactic colectomy to be planned.
Usage notes
Attenuated FAP produces fewer polyps and later cancers. Gardner syndrome is a variant with bone osteomas and soft-tissue tumors. FAP accounts for under 1 percent of colorectal cancers. In neurology the same letters can mean familial amyloid polyneuropathy, so check the context.
