EUS stands for Endoscopic ultrasound, a gastroenterology abbreviation.

Endoscopy with an ultrasound probe at the tip, giving high-resolution images of the gut wall and nearby organs such as the pancreas, bile duct and lymph nodes. It stages GI cancers, characterizes pancreatic cysts and submucosal lesions, and guides fine-needle aspiration or biopsy.

Example: EUS with FNB of 2.1 cm pancreatic head mass; cytology pending, CA 19-9 ordered.

Usage notes

EUS is among the most sensitive tests for small pancreatic tumors and common bile duct stones. Therapeutic EUS now includes draining pancreatic fluid collections, gallbladder drainage and creating bypasses between the stomach and bile duct or small bowel. Pronounced as letters.
