GES stands for Gastric emptying study, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Nuclear medicine test in which the patient eats a meal labeled with a radioactive tracer, usually technetium-99m egg, and imaging measures how much food remains in the stomach over four hours. It is the standard test for gastroparesis.
Example: GES: 35 percent retention at 4 hours, consistent with moderate gastroparesis.
Usage notes
Retention above 10 percent at four hours is abnormal. Opioids, anticholinergics and GLP-1 receptor agonists delay emptying and should be held when possible. Blood glucose above about 275 mg/dL at the time of the test can produce falsely delayed results. Breath tests using carbon-13 offer an alternative without radiation.
