1. Fecal immunochemical test
Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations
At-home colorectal cancer screening test that uses antibodies against human hemoglobin to detect blood in a single stool sample. Recommended yearly for average-risk US adults from age 45; any positive result calls for a follow-up colonoscopy.
Example: Mailed FIT returned positive; colonoscopy scheduled within three months per screening protocol.
Because the antibodies target human globin, which is digested in the upper gut, FIT is specific for lower GI bleeding and needs no dietary changes. England's bowel cancer screening programme switched from guaiac FOBT to FIT in 2019. Pronounced "fit" as a word. Multitarget stool DNA tests combine a FIT component with DNA markers.
2. Feed-in tariff (FiT)
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
Policy that guarantees renewable energy producers, from homeowners with rooftop solar to wind farm owners, a fixed payment per kilowatt-hour fed into the grid, usually for 15 to 20 years. FiTs drove the early growth of solar and wind in Europe.
Example: Under the 2010 FiT, the family received a guaranteed rate for every kilowatt-hour their panels generated.
Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) of 2000 made feed-in tariffs famous and helped scale up global solar manufacturing. Rates were cut over time as costs fell, and many countries replaced FiTs with competitive auctions. The United Kingdom closed its FiT scheme to new applicants in 2019.
3. Federal income tax
Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations
Pay stub abbreviation for the federal income tax an employer withholds from each paycheck, calculated from the employee's W-4 and IRS withholding tables. Some payroll systems label it FITW or FWT.
Example: The FIT line on my stub went up after I updated my W-4 for the side job.
Withholding is only an estimate; the difference from the actual liability is settled on Form 1040 as a refund or balance due. Unlike the Social Security tax, it has no wage cap, and the amount depends on filing status and the adjustments entered on the W-4.
