1. Frozen embryo transfer

Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations

Transfer of an embryo that was frozen (vitrified) in an earlier IVF cycle and thawed, timed to a prepared uterine lining in a natural or hormone-programmed cycle. FET now makes up a large share of IVF transfers.

Example: FET of single euploid blastocyst on day 6 of progesterone; pregnancy test in 9 days.

Vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing method, gives very high embryo survival after thawing. Freezing all embryos can reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Programmed cycles without ovulation have been linked to higher preeclampsia risk than natural cycles. Pronounced as letters.

2. Field-effect transistor

Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations

Family of transistors in which an electric field from a voltage on the gate controls the conductivity of a channel between source and drain, drawing almost no input current. FETs include MOSFETs, JFETs and high-electron-mobility transistors used in radio and power electronics.

Example: The FET input stage gives the oscilloscope probe amplifier a very high input impedance.

Julius Edgar Lilienfeld patented the field-effect principle in 1925, decades before a working device could be built, and Oskar Heil filed another patent in 1934. Because the gate draws almost no current, FETs are voltage-controlled, unlike current-controlled bipolar transistors.
