1. Electromagnetic interference
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Unwanted electrical noise from one device that disrupts another, conducted along wires or radiated through the air. Switching power supplies, motors, digital circuits and radio transmitters can all produce EMI, causing buzzing audio, corrupted data or malfunctions.
Example: A ferrite clamp on the USB cable cleared up the EMI that was causing static in the speakers.
Designers reduce EMI with shielding, filtering, careful PCB layout, twisted-pair wiring and ferrite beads. Concerns about EMI are why airlines restricted electronics during takeoff and landing for decades. Regulations limit emissions so that devices can coexist.
2. Equated monthly installment
Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations
Fixed monthly payment that repays a loan over its term, with each installment covering interest on the outstanding balance plus part of the principal. The term is standard for home, car and personal loans in India and across South Asia and the Gulf.
Example: The bank quoted an EMI of ₹21,500 for a ₹25 lakh home loan over 20 years.
In early years most of each EMI goes to interest, and the principal share grows over time, exactly as in a US amortizing mortgage. "No-cost EMI" offers on electronics usually fold the interest into a discount rather than truly waiving it. American and British lenders simply say "monthly payment."
3. Electric and Musical Industries
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
British music company formed in 1931 by the merger of the Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company (His Master's Voice). It owned Abbey Road Studios and released the Beatles' records on its Parlophone label.
Example: The Beatles recorded almost all their music at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London.
EMI was one of the "Big Four" labels until 2012, when its recorded music business was sold to Universal Music Group and its publishing arm to a Sony-led consortium. The EMI name survives as a label within Universal.
