CategoriesMedical

FHR stands for Fetal heart rate, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Heartbeat of the fetus, normally 110–160 beats per minute at baseline, monitored during prenatal visits and labor. Patterns of variability, accelerations and decelerations indicate fetal well-being or possible oxygen deprivation.

Example: FHR baseline 135, moderate variability, accelerations present, no decelerations: category I tracing.

Usage notes

A 2008 NICHD workshop created the three-tier system: category I (normal), II (indeterminate) and III (abnormal, needing prompt action). Late decelerations suggest placental insufficiency, while variable decelerations usually reflect cord compression. Moderate variability is the most reassuring single feature.
