EFM stands for Electronic fetal monitoring, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Continuous recording of the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions during labor, usually with external ultrasound and pressure sensors on the abdomen, or internal electrodes and catheters. Tracings are interpreted using NICHD categories.
Example: Continuous EFM due to oxytocin; category II tracing with recurrent variables, reposition and amnioinfusion.
Usage notes
Continuous EFM became routine in US hospitals in the 1970s, but studies show it increases cesarean and operative deliveries without lowering cerebral palsy or perinatal death. Intermittent auscultation is an acceptable alternative for low-risk labors. Also called cardiotocography (CTG) outside the US.
