1. Floppy disk drive
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Drive that reads and writes floppy disks, the removable magnetic storage of personal computers from the 1970s to the early 2000s. The 3.5-inch high-density disk held 1.44 MB.
Example: The vintage synthesizer still loads its sounds from a 3.5-inch disk in its built-in FDD.
IBM introduced the 8-inch floppy in 1971, followed by 5.25-inch (1976) and Sony's 3.5-inch (early 1980s) disks. Apple's iMac dropped the floppy drive in 1998, and Sony stopped making floppy disks in 2011. The 3.5-inch disk lives on as the "save" icon. In 2024 Japan's government announced it had scrapped the last regulations requiring floppy disks for official submissions. In telecom, FDD means frequency-division duplex.
2. Frequency-division duplex
Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations
Method of two-way radio communication in which uplink and downlink use separate paired frequencies at the same time. Most LTE bands below 3 GHz are FDD.
Example: Band 12 is an FDD band, with separate frequencies for uploading and downloading.
FDD requires paired spectrum blocks separated by a guard band, which is why spectrum auctions often sell paired blocks. It suits symmetrical traffic such as voice calls. The alternative, TDD, alternates directions on one frequency. In computer hardware, FDD means floppy disk drive.
