1. Ethinyl estradiol

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Synthetic estrogen in most combined oral contraceptive pills, patches and vaginal rings, usually 10 to 35 micrograms per pill. It is more potent orally than natural estradiol because it resists liver breakdown.

Example: Rx: norgestimate 0.25 mg/EE 35 mcg, 1 tab daily, start Sunday.

The estrogen component of combined contraceptives is responsible for the increased risk of venous blood clots, which is higher in smokers over 35, so those patients are steered to progestin-only methods. Doses have fallen sharply since the first pill (Enovid, 1960), which contained much larger hormone amounts.

2. Estonia

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Estonia's code comes from Eesti, its own name for itself; Tallinn is the capital and EST the alpha-3 code. The e-residency program lets foreigners register EU companies online.

Example: E-residency cards issued by EE let foreign founders sign documents digitally.

The language code for Estonian is et, which is also the ISO country code for Ethiopia. Skype was developed by Estonian engineers. EE is also a UK mobile network.

3. EE Limited

Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations

UK mobile network operator, owned by BT Group, formed in 2010 by merging the British operations of Orange and T-Mobile. It launched the United Kingdom's first 4G network in 2012.

Example: I'm on EE, so I had 5G signal at the festival when my friends on other networks didn't.

The company first traded as Everything Everywhere before adopting the EE brand in 2012. BT acquired it in 2016 and later made EE its lead brand for consumers who bundle mobile and broadband. It frequently tops independent UK network performance tests. In software, EE also means enterprise edition.

4. Enterprise Edition

Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations

Paid version of a software product aimed at businesses, adding features such as single sign-on, audit logs, clustering, priority support and compliance tools to the free or community edition.

Example: Clustering is only available in the EE, so we need a license before going to production.

Java EE, the enterprise edition of the Java platform, was handed to the Eclipse Foundation and renamed Jakarta EE in 2018. Vendors such as GitLab and Odoo use the CE/EE split. In the UK, EE is also the name of a major mobile network operator, which can cause confusion in search results.

5. Employee

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Shorthand for employee in benefits enrollment, payroll and HR documents, most visibly in coverage tiers such as "EE only," "EE + spouse," "EE + child(ren)" and "family," and in labels for employee-paid contributions.

Example: Choosing EE + spouse coverage raises my premium to $186 per paycheck.

Paired with ER for employer, as in "EE contribution" and "ER contribution." Pay stubs may also mark taxes such as "EE Medicare." In US savings bonds, Series EE is an unrelated product name.
