DWG stands for Drawing, a file format abbreviation.
Native file format of Autodesk AutoCAD for 2D and 3D design data, the most widely used CAD drawing format in architecture, engineering and construction.
Example: The architect sent the floor plans as DWG files, so open them in AutoCAD or a free DWG viewer.
Usage notes
AutoCAD has used DWG since its launch in 1982, and the format changes with major AutoCAD releases. Autodesk has never published a full specification; the Open Design Alliance, founded in 1998, created compatible libraries used by many other CAD programs. Autodesk offers the free DWG TrueView viewer. Older software may not open drawings saved in newer DWG versions.
